Help Documents: Domain Names

Web Pages @ Your Domain:

There are two ways you can use your domain name with respect to web pages. A regular domain name simply becomes an alias for "www.islandnet.com", so instead of an URL that looks like this:

   http://www.islandnet.com/~username
Your URL will look like this:

   http://www.yourdomain.com/~username
Note that you still need to specify either a username or a web alias after the domain name. To get rid of this you need a virtual domain.

To be virtual, your domain needs to "point" at one of our virtual web servers (we do this). Once this is set up your URL would look like this:

   http://www.yourdomain.com/
There are other advantages to having a virtual domain on Islandnet.com as well:

  • You get detailed traffic reports that include such information as page hits, which search engines are being used to find you, which search terms people are using to find you, what platforms and browsers your visitors are using, which sites are accessing you the most, which sites are referring people to yours, and much more.

  • You can create your own customized error messages so people won't see the Islandnet.com specific screens. For example, try visiting an URL on Islandnet.com that doesn't exist: does_not_exist.html

E-Mail @ Your Domain:

Most ISPs will simply direct any and all e-mail messages for your domain to a single catch-all account. While this allows you virtually any number of e-mail addresses, it isn't very flexible.

At Islandnet.com we allow you full control over your domain through the optional use of a "map file". This file maps e-mail addresses at your domain to real e-mail addresses (which may or may not be physically located at Islandnet.com).

So for example, you can have all mail that arrives for "webmaster@yourdomain.com" be automatically redirected to the person who handles your web pages, and all mail for "sales@yourdomain.com" might be redirected to still another person, and so on.

If an incoming message doesn't match any of the mappings you've set up, then it gets filed into the default mailbox (the account that the domain is registered to).

Additional features allow you to create mappings that generate a "no such user" error message, to silently delete messages, and forward messages to a fax number or pager.

The map file facility is available with any domain hosted at Islandnet.com, whether you've elected to make it a virtual domain or not.
